![]() There is an increasingly silly world-wide interest in trying to send fizzy pop bottles as far away as possible as fast as possible. In 2001 those jolly silly people at the UK's National Physical Laboratory decided to host a competition for those silly enough to want to have a go, and so we decided this was too silly an opportunity to miss. The rules of the NPL competition are quite simple: the rocket may not contain external metal parts, its reaction mass must be water, and the propellant must be human-pumped air. Our team (unofficially representing the Met Office's Met Research Flight) earned a very respectable 8th place overall, with a best flight landing some 134 metres from the launch site. It would have been further, but a tree got in the way. I should point out that a couple of these photos have been taken from NPL's web site and are Crown Copyright. The originals can be found at the NPL press release and the NPL Water Rockets web page.
